[After having to face the body he helped make and also re-break his fucking wrist, Hermann is feeling pretty bad! He's limped off to throw up, this time in the italian restaurant bathroom because mcd's is for scrubs.

He's so glad he's done with acting but actually, he isn't. He has to keep this up all through the trial tomorrow, with those weeping, vengeful people. He had so much confidence this morning, that this was the right path. That this is what he had to do, and that it was justified. A murderer is a small sacrifice for the lives of billions.

Now he isn't so sure.]

[Once Newt is all finished with his investigation duties, he's off to find Hermann. It doesn't take long. Newt saw him sneak into the restaurant, and it's not like Hermann is all that stealthy. Newt knows what he's up to in here.

He quietly heads into the bathroom and locks the door behind him. They don't need eavesdroppers for this.]

How'd your end go?

[His voice is much more somber than usual. He's spent the whole day acting too, and he's tired.]

[Hermann wipes his mouth with a paper towel, having just finished washing up a bit in the sink.]

About as good as could be expected. [He sighs.] I barely had to act for some of it. I think they believed that I hurt myself by falling, and I did everything as I would if this were a normal investigation.

[He turns.]

The problem is Izaya. I don't think he suspected me specifically, but he mentioned Vanitas and I keeping an eye on one another, in case either of us were the culprit. They also found the injection sites.

[Newt nods. The plan to send Hermann in to find Jacopo's corpse was risky, but Newt's glad it seems to have paid off. He would've preferred to go himself, but, well. They needed a cover for Hermann's wrist.

He swears under his breath at the mention of the injection sites.]

Great. Well, playing connect the dots while trying to open a man's throat is a little bit on the tricky side, okay? [He's getting defensive, even if he knows he has no reason to be.]

It doesn't matter. I don't think anyone's figured out what was in the syringes, and the needle marks on top of the throat-slitting this will just confuse the evidence more. There's some chatter going around that it smells like garlic, so we can just point to arsenic for the trial.

[He folds his arms and leans against the bathroom counter.]

And the problem isn't just Izaya. It's Monika and Setz, too.

[He's not going to judge Newt's cutting abilities. He's fairly certain he would've done about the same.]

Arsenic. Yes. It should baffle them as to why someone would poison him just to slit his throat. Could point to incompetence, if they used the wrong dosage.

[He also leans back against the counter so he can free his hand up to run it through his hair.]

Monika especially. She wants revenge. [He sounds irritated.] How were we supposed to know they had some sort of romantic thing going on? Perhaps she'll change her tune if it comes out that he was a Reaper.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Either way, I don't think anyone will be able to point to sodium pentothal, which means we're likely off the hook there. And if anyone does... [He shrugs.] This is real life, not some movie.

[says the live action anime star.]

Not if, dude. I'm going to Max about that as soon as I can without it looking suspicious. We need to get that information on the table as quickly as possible.

What if he doesn't say it publicly? He revealed Ranpo, but only after the trial.

[But he did say he didn't care if everyone knew, assuming they managed to kill Jacopo. Which... they did. They haven't gotten away with it yet, though.]

I don't think anyone will figure out what our purpose was, but that might not matter. They might see poison and assume it was the two people who can't fight.

[Second thoughts: he's having them. Like, a whole day too late.]
